These two wouldn't be the first to see their relationship differently. One thinking it was a date and the other thinking it was just hanging out. How did the 2nd or 3rd "date" end? Was it with a kiss (as in a date) or "cool, let's do this again sometime (as in hanging out with a friend)". I see it with my teens. They won't use the "D" word. They hangout and then all of the sudden, they are a couple. I guess avoiding the risk of rejection at the expense of uncertainty.
